The Andromeda Galaxy

I’ve always wondered who lives in that galaxy, 2.5 million light-years or so from here, and which is roughly (to an astronomer, that is, within a factor of 2) the size of our own. The light we see on a clear night from Andromeda left there before there were humans on Earth. When the beings living somewhere in the Andromeda Galaxy look at our own Milky Way, they are seeing the light that left here 2.5 million years ago as well.

They are seeing our deep pasts, just as we are seeing theirs.

And in about 4-5 billion years, our galaxies will collide. I’m sure it will be quite a show, from the Goddess-eye view. A new galaxy will be formed.

And after that, in some other place in the Universe, will someone give a name to this new galaxy? And will they wonder who lives there? And will they know that they were once two galaxies, separated by millions of years and unfathomable distances?

It’d be nice to think that they would wonder.
